Network of Organizations for Science and Technology Communication (NOSTC) was formed about 26 years back with the objectives of initiating and implementing coordinated programmes of science outreach in association with government and non-government organizations. It is mandated to communicate Science and Technology to masses, stimulate scientific and technological temper and coordinate and orchestrate such efforts throughout the country.
Science Journalism bridges the gap between scientists and public, using factual information to engage readers through various media formats. A certification course, spanning 6 weeks and available online and in-person, aims to attract more individuals to become scientific journalists. The certificate course is offered under the proposal titled “Developing Skill and Enthusiasm among Teachers of Science Communication in the Digital age” has many unique features and was developed jointly by NOSTC with LPU, Punjab as a knowledge partner; The project is approved by NCSTC. The objectives of the project are to enhance skills of science communication in professional students and teachers of mass Communications further, and to provide lecture notes with references for further reading, developing assessment tools and encourage fresh graduates to become enthusiastic science communicators. Students pursuing or having completed graduation degrees in journalism, mass communication, science, or technology can submit their applications, regardless of employment status. | |
Teachers from any discipline can join the course, but preference will be given to those in science, technology, journalism, and mass communication. | |
Professionals working in science and technology with journalistic experience or temperament are also encouraged to apply. | |
Anyone having experience in journalism. Note: Preference will be given to applicants with at least one published work in news, journals, or magazines, excluding social media experience. Note: If application for the certificate are more than the seats offered then, applicants from Science and Journalism field (education or employment) will be given preference. |

50 seats are offered for a certification course that will be filled on a first-come basis. The seat will be confirmed only after payment of the fee and upon receiving the confirmation email from the university.
An experienced faculty in their respective fields will be the master trainer and instructor for the various topics and subtopics that will be covered under the courses. The master trainer or instructor will be either from Lovely Professional University and other renowned Institutes of India or aboard.
The curriculum under the scheme consists of Media and communication, Scientific temperament, Science and Development of communication, writing for media and development of content, infographics, communicating uncertainty with data etc. Course content will be divided into topics and subtopics to avoid repetition. These topics will be allotted to specific trainers. PowerPoint presentation may be used to deliver the course content.
The presentations and links for self-learning content will be shared with participants within the 7 days from the date of session. An abstract of the topics to get the brief about the topic well in advance at least 3-7 days from the date of session.
Following are the important points that to be taken care of during the visit to the university to completion of the course in the last week after Dussehra break.
The evaluation of assignment, assessment and attendance policies of the university will be applicable.
The certificate at the end of the course will be awarded to the participants who meet the minimum requirement of the course completion and that are maintaining attendance, submission of assignments and scoring minimum marks in assessments.
In case any matter is not covered in these guidelines, a decision was given to the appropriate authorities of the university or NOSTC, DST will be final and binding.
